So, you want to be a Sable?
First things first… This is not a job application page.
It’s a filter.
Black Sable doesn’t hire based on who can send the prettiest portfolio.
We hire based on fit, obsession, and the discipline to show up long before anyone asks you to. If you’re looking for a quick submit-and-wait process, you’re in the wrong place. If you’re willing to earn your way into the room? Keep going.
Your portfolio isn’t as
important as you think it is.
Your approach is.
We’ve hired “talented” people who didn’t perform.
And we’ve hired people with potential who became exceptional because they had the right mindset,
the right character, and the right commitment to the craft.
At Black Sable, culture fit matters more than raw skill. Skill can be built. The wrong attitude can’t.
So, if you’re thinking about sending us an email to apply, please don’t.
We’re not looking for another generic AI-written email that you’d send any corporate Joe Schmoe.
We’re busy building a community over here.
And that means what we care about is whether you’re willing to show up consistently and show us why we should actually care about you.
To do that, your next move is simple:
Who we notice:
People who show up without being chased
Contribute without performing
Are curious, honest, and self-aware
Are committed to getting better
And when someone stands out?
Don’t worry… We’ll reach out.
What we’re looking for
(and what we’re not)
A Sable is someone who is:
Self-aware
Willing to learn
Able to take feedback (and give it)
Committed to doing great work without needing a whip
Obsessed with improving their craft
We don’t track hours.
We don’t micromanage.
We care that the work gets done and that you show up like a professional.
We draw every day. Once a day. On company time.
This isn’t optional. It’s part of the culture.
Your practice is yours, but the point is simple: get better at drawing for the work we do.
If your drawing practice has no connection to improving your architectural craft, it won’t take you where you want to go.
Location Matters
For now, you must be based near Johannesburg.
Black Sable is remote-first, but not remote-anywhere.
We’re only interested in people within about a 30-minute drive from us so that we can spend time together in person.
Meet all these requirements?
How to Become a Sable
Your Email is the Gate
If your email isn’t strong, we won't open the attachment.
If we ever ask you to send one, here’s what should be included:
Your name and qualification
Your core architecture skills (model-making, modelling, drawing, presentation, etc.)
Adjacent skills (photography, video, editing, writing — if they’re strong)
Soft skills (feedback, strategic thinking, discipline, etc.)
No AI-written copy ( Generic is invisible. Tailored is memorable)
You are writing to an audience. Write like you know who you’re talking to.
1
Your Portfolio Must Earn the Scroll
You have about three seconds to hold attention. So:
Ditch the bio page at the front
Lead with a captivating landing page image (render/photo/model)
Show your skills clearly, without weird graphics
2
Show Up Where We Are
You don’t have to live in our Instagram comments… but engagement is a fast way to be seen.
If two candidates are equal, we’ll notice the one who:
Shows up
pays attention
contributes thoughtfully
3
Be Real in the Interview
Don’t wear a mask of who you think we want.
We don’t hire “yes people.”
We hire humans who can think, challenge, contribute, and communicate like adults.
