COMMUNITY

So, you want to be a Sable?

First things first… This is not a job application page.

It’s a filter, but also an invitation.

Black Sable doesn’t hire based on who can send the prettiest portfolio.

We hire based on fit, obsession, and the discipline to show up long before anyone asks you to. If you’re looking for a quick submit-and-wait process, you’re in the wrong place. If you’re willing to earn your way into the room and be part of something bigger, keep going.

Your portfolio isn’t as
important as you think it is.

Your approach is.

Five members of the Black Sable team sitting and standing in front of a small timber studio structure surrounded by trees and gravel landscaping.

We’ve hired “talented” people who didn’t perform.

And we’ve hired people with potential who became exceptional because they had the right mindset,
the right character, and the right commitment to the craft.

At Black Sable, culture fit matters more than raw skill. Skill can be built. The wrong attitude can’t.

Three Black Sable team members gathered closely around a tablet, reviewing digital design work together in a covered outdoor workspace.

So, if you’re thinking about sending us an email to apply, please don’t.

We’re not looking for another generic AI-written email that you’d send to any corporate firm.

Because we’re not just hiring. We’re building something.

A community of people who care about what they do, who think deeply, who show up consistently, and who want to be part of something bigger than themselves.

Our Discord isn’t just where people get hired. It’s where the community lives. Everyone who joins the team comes through it. But not everyone in it is trying to be hired (and that’s ok).

If you want to be part of it, your next move is simple:

And our community!

If you want to be part of it, your next move is simple:

Who we notice:

  • People who show up without being chased

  • Contribute without performing

  • Are curious, honest, and self-aware

  • Are committed to getting better

What we’re looking for
(and what we’re not)

A Sable is someone who is:

  • Self-aware

  • Willing to learn

  • Able to take feedback (and give it)

  • Committed to doing great work without needing a whip

  • Obsessed with improving their craft

We don’t track hours.

We don’t micromanage.

We care that the work gets done and that you show up like a badass.

We draw every day. Once a day. On company time.

This isn’t optional. It’s part of the culture.

Your practice is yours, but the point is simple: get better at drawing for the work we do.

If your drawing practice has no connection to improving your architectural craft, it won’t take you where you want to go.

Location Matters

For now, you must be based near Johannesburg.

Black Sable is remote-first, but not remote-anywhere.

We’re only interested in people within about a 60-minute drive from us so that we can spend time together in person, and who are willing to make that drive when it matters.

Meet all these requirements?

We hire from people we recognize.

1

Be Interested (Not Just Available)

  • You’re asking better questions over time

We’re not looking for people who “want a job.”
